More about Venini & C.
Venini & C. is an Italian glass factory founded by Paolo Venini (1895-1959), one of the main Italian designers of the twentieth century. He was born in Cusano, near Milan and, after serving for a few years in the Italian Royal Army during World War I decided to train as a lawyer, although his family had been involved with the manufacture of glass for generations. However, he soon met Giacomo Cappellin, owner of an antique store. In 1921 they opened a glass factory together on the islands of Murano, Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C.
with Luigi Ceresa and Emilio Hochs as investors, they decided to buy the recently closed Murano Glass Factory of Andrea Riododa, hire the glass blowers of the old firm and retain Rioda himself to act as technical director of the new company. However, Riododa died before he could start production and many of the workers left for a competitive company. Even so, the firm, which was characterized by a modern design, soon achieved enormous success, especially thanks to the support of distributors' contacts in Milan.
After various problems, Cappellin retired from the company in 1925, taking with him the majority of the company's masters of the company and launching a competitor. Venini reorganized with new glass blowers and, first as Vetro Softi Muranesi Venini & C. (V.S.M. Venini & C.), and later Venini & C., managing to rise as a design leader among Murano's signatures.
The company trusted the creative direction to the sculptor of Murano Napoleone Martinuzzi, although Paolo himself played a fundamental role in the design of several of the company's best known products. Although his own founder was a great talent glass designer, his true genius was inviting Italian and international designers with a great vision of the future to Murano's workshops to create pieces of Venini, including Giò Ponti, Massimo Vignelli, the designer Finn Tapio Wirkkala, Thomas Stearns of the United States and Fulvio Bianconi. In fact, the firm was "to" take the tradition of Murano de Blido de Glass and combine it with the tradition of the French fashion industry to use designers. " Carlo Scarpa was probably the most prominent. He worked as the main designer and managed to completely modernize Venini, introducing simple shapes, bright primary colors and bold designs. Today he is remembered as a great architect.
After the death of its founder, Paolo Venini, in 1959, the company was able to continue standing more than 20 years under the direction of different members of his family, until he was finally sold in 1985. She was renamed as Società Venini S.P.A. and acquired in 1997 by the Royal Scandinavia group. Four years later, in 2001, it bought it Italian Luxury Industries Group and, finally, acquired by Damiani S.P.A. In 2016.
