Charlotte Perrand was born in Paris in 1903 and later studied at the school of the "Union Central des Arts Décoratif". Inspired by the architectural treatises of Le Corbusier, she convinced him in 1927 that she was working for him. Their tasks were the production of prototypes and public presentations of the studio designs. Together with Pierre Jeanneret, Perriand developed a series of steel tube chairs that - then as now - were considered a symbol of the machine age.

In 1940 she traveled to Japan as an official consultant for industrial design, but after Japan had entered the war, she was stuck in Vietnam from 1942 to 1946. Perriand used the time of her exile to learn local web and woodworking techniques. So when she returned to France, she had the intention to integrate straw and bamboo into modern design.

Back in France, Perriand continued to work with Le Corbusier and Prouvé. She contributed a significant part to Le Corbusier's Design Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. Until her death in 1999, Perriand remained an influential personality of modernity.
