Wifredo Lam, Oiseaux de Feu (A+B) Sculptures, 1970s, Metal, Set of 2

The sculptural language of Wifredo Lam merges Surrealist influences with Afro-Caribbean symbolism, resulting in hybrid, totemic forms. This pair, conceived as complementary elements, emphasizes the dialogue between material and form through contrasting patinas and vertical structures. Wifredo Lam's plastic research combines surrealist influences and Afro-Caribbean symbolism, resulting in hybrid and totemic forms. This pair, conceived as a complementary whole, develops a dialogue between matter and form through contrasting surfaces and a dynamic vertical structure. The pair Oiseaux de feu represents a significant example of Wifredo Lam's plastic production, developed parallel to his pictorial research and strongly influenced by the European experience and, in particular, the ceramic and sculptural context of Albissola. The totemic and stylized forms recall the hybrid iconography typical of the artist, in which anthropomorphic and zoomorphic elements merge into dynamic vertical structures. The duality between the two versions-gold and silver-emphasizes the formal and textural dialogue between the surfaces, giving the whole a strong plastic and decorative presence. Although it is a multiple, the work maintains a relevant quality of execution and fits consistently into the body of the artist's three-dimensional works. Wifredo Lam is considered one of the leading figures in 20th-century art, known for synthesizing Surrealist, Cubist, and Afro-Caribbean influences into a unique and recognizable language. During his sojourns in Europe, and in particular in Italy, Lam developed a concrete interest in ceramics and sculpture, collaborating with craft and artistic realities that contributed to the dissemination of signature multiples intended for a wider audience than unique works. Lam's multiple works, and particularly paired sculptures such as Oiseaux de feu, have achieved significant results in the international market, with major adjudications at top auction houses such as Christie's. The presence of the complete pair (A & B) is a distinctive feature and increases collector interest over single specimens.
