About This Piece

Vintage Design

This classic set of four Visitor Chairs by Matteo Grassi combines the structural clarity of classic Bauhaus modernism with the high-quality leather craftsmanship for which the Italian manufacturer is renowned. The characteristic combination of chrome-plated tubular steel and robust black saddle leather lends the chairs an elegant, architectural, and timeless appeal.

The frame is made of continuously bent, chrome-plated tubular steel. Its minimalist lines create a striking contrast to the black saddle leather. The seat and backrest require no conventional upholstery: the robust leather is stretched between the structural elements, creating a slightly springy seating surface. The leather-covered armrests continue this material concept. The exposed construction is particularly appealing – nothing is concealed; rather, the tubular steel, leather, seams, and fasteners themselves become design elements.

The set of four chairs offered here is in very good vintage condition. The black saddle leather is beautifully preserved, showing only a minimal, authentic patina and a few minor signs of age-appropriate wear. This subtle patina accentuates the leather's original character without detracting from its overall refined appearance. The chrome-plated tubular steel frames are also beautifully presented, boasting an attractive, even sheen. The leather armrest covers and visible seams are equally well-maintained.

The design clearly draws inspiration from the cantilever chairs developed by Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer in the 1920s. Matteo Grassi later revived this concept, reinterpreting it with a particularly luxurious use of materials.

About the Maker

Matteo Grassi

In 1880 in the Brianza region of Italy, the Grassi family began crafting saddles, bridles, reins, and other leather equipment for horses. Following World War II, the Grassis joined the rapid industrialization under way in northern Italy and expanded their production to include a wide range of leather goods, especially items for both the home and public interiors. By the late 1970s, Matteo Grassi had built an international reputation for distinctive, finely made leather furniture, from chairs and sofas, to tables and beds. One of the most successful among the brand’s early original designs was Tito Agnoli’s Korium Armchair (1979).

Over the years, Matteo Grassi has worked with an impressive roster of designers, such as Carlo Bartoli, Piero Lissoni, Alessandro Mendini, Franco Poli, Eoos, Luigi Massoni, Jean Nouvel, Matteo Nunziati, Mauro Lipparini, and Rodolfo Dordoni. The brand—associated with high quality materials and generously sleek forms—is well represented in airports and executive offices around the world.

After more than a century of production, Matteo Grassi has recently gone out of business.
