About This Piece

Vintage Design

A ceramic Talavera table lamp in the classic blue, white and ochre or saffron yellow-orange, hand-painted by the renowned Cerámica Artística Alférez in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. It has been newly rewired for the US, the plug will be changed to suit another country at no cost, and the quoted height includes the shade. The decoration is Renaissance in derivation, the scrolling vocabulary the town's potters have drawn on since the sixteenth century. Cerámica Artística Alférez is one of roughly thirty workshops still working in Talavera; apart from electric wheels and kilns, the clay preparation, glazing and painting are much as they were four hundred years ago. UNESCO added the tradition to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2019.
