Architecte suisse de très grand renom, Mario Botta est né en 1943 à Mendrisio, Tessin. Après un apprentissage à Lugano, il fréquente le lycée artistique de Milan et poursuit ses études à l’Institut Universitaire d’Architecture à Venise, où il obtient son diplôme en 1969 sous la direction de Carlo Scarpa et Giuseppe Mazzariol. Durant cette période il aura notamment l’occasion de rencontrer et travailler avec Le Corbusier et Louis I. Kahn. Dès le début de son activité professionnelle en 1970, ses premières constructions annoncent l’intense recherche dont vont témoigner de nombreuses réalisations à travers le monde. Il poursuit parallèlement sa réflexion didactique en enseignant, animant conférences, séminaires et critiques dans différentes écoles d’architecture d’Europe, Asie, Amérique et Amérique Latine. D’importantes reconnaissances internationales lui ont été attribuées pour son travail et nombreuses sont aussi les expositions consacrées à son travail de création. Il a reçu plus de 50 prix et distinctions. Parmi ses réalisations les plus connues : le Musée d’art moderne de San Francisco, la cathédrale d’Evry, le Musée MART de Rovereto en Italie, le Musée Tinguely à Bâle, l’église Santo Volto à Turin ou l’hôtel Tschuggen Bergoase à Arosa...
