About This Piece

Vintage Design

An extremely elegant and tasteful sideboard in teak, designed by Johannes Andersen for Uldum Møbelfabrik in Denmark. An exclusive piece of furniture of the highest quality, where beautiful materials, well-thought-out functions and exquisite Danish craftsmanship come together in a harmonious whole.

The sideboard is characterized by its long, clean lines and well-balanced proportions. The teak has a deep, golden brown tone with a slightly darker character, and the beautiful grain has been carefully preserved across all surfaces of the furniture. The interior of the cabinets is also made of teak, which reinforces the solid and exclusive feeling. with its unusually neat proportions, this is a more easily placed model than many of Johannes Andersen's larger sideboards.

On each side there is a sliding door with a shelf behind that can be moved or removed as needed. The sliding doors do not require any extra space in front of the furniture and make it easy to access the contents even when the sideboard is placed in a room where space is limited.

Between the sliding doors are four spacious drawers.

The elongated, neat handles on the sliding doors and the long, softly shaped handles of the drawers are characteristic of Johannes Andersen's design language. Every detail is carefully designed and contributes to the sideboard's calm, harmonious and sophisticated expression.

The furniture stands on round, tapered legs that give an airy impression and are easy to dismantle for transport. The previous owner has covered the back in teak so that the sideboard can also be placed free-standing in the room. The covering does not affect the function in any way and is considered to be able to be removed if a more original design is desired.

About the Creator

Johannes Andersen

While information on designer Johannes Andersen is limited and difficult to verify, it is believed that he was born in 1903 in Aarhus, Denmark, and that he initially apprenticed as a cabinetmaker. He went on to work for many years in a number of workshops before opening his own architectural and furniture workshop in the 1930s.

Andersen’s designs span seating, tables, and storage in well-crafted materials, such as rosewood and teak. His career paralleled the midcentury’s growing appreciation for Danish furniture designs, and he attracted international attention—particularly for coffee tables like the highly sculptural Smile Table.

Andersen worked steadily for his own firm—as well as Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian companies such as Trensum, CFC Silkeborg, Bramin, and Uldum Møbelfabrik—until he closed his shop in his eighties. He passed away in 1991.
