Vintage Carved Sideboard in Fir Wood, China, 1930

This antique carved sideboard in fir wood features a front with carved geometric panels, two central drawers and carved rosettes on the side flanks. It originates from northwestern China, from the late Qing dynasty, where fir was worked using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

The Hexi corridor, in northwestern China, was for centuries the obligatory passage between central China and Central Asia. Domestic furniture from the region reflects that frontier position: traditional Chinese structures adorned with flat carvings of strong geometric character, distinct from the more figurative decorations of the southern provinces. This sideboard type with drawers and side rosettes is found in rural houses and small urban residences along the corridor.

The body is built in solid fir. The front combines two stacked drawers on the left, several recessed panels carved with diamonds and rosettes, and horizontal registers at the base. The sides display carved rosettes with a scalloped outline, and the flanks finish on a shaped plinth. The drawer pulls are circular brass. The construction is traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon, without metal fasteners.

The carving covers the front with regular rhythm and preserves the reading of the panel layout. The patina is a light blond, characteristic of aged fir without added lacquer. The surface of the top shows the natural figure of the grain, with soft chromatic variations and slight longitudinal cracks typical of the wood. The whole has been kept in continuous use.

Given its length and low height, this sideboard fits ample rooms as a piece of imposing scale. It can serve as a dining sideboard in large rooms, a low cabinet in a living room, or a console in long hallways. It works in wabi-sabi, japandi, contemporary rustic and orientalist-inspired interiors. The height allows use as a low cabinet for television with the screen hung above.
