Impressive, vintage, art déco, large chest of drawers with 3 large drawers on slightly elevated, carved feet, from the 1930s- 40s.
Made of a wooden structure with a "flamed" walnut veneer from the Auvergne and a lacquered finish, this dresser is truly a standout piece, that is elegant and practical all at once. After mahogany, walnut wood is the most appreciated by cabinet makers/woodworkers. Due to its durable structure and the fineness of its grain, it facilitates the work of sculpture and polishes beautifully. The Auvergne walnut in particular, is the famous one that is used to create pieces.
The natural patterns of this walnut, do indeed resemble large “flames”, that vary in color from a tawny yellow, veined with dark, rich, warm brown tones, to lighter wheat or blonde areas, that take on a pinkish hue as it ages, further adding to its beauty. All of of these qualities, in contrast with the sheen of the lacquered finish and brightness of the 6, original, circular, chrome-colored pull knobs on the drawers, make the piece that much more striking (see photos.)
The slightly high, sculpted legs, give the piece just enough added height. The curved front, side panels and slightly rounded front angles, as well as the smooth edges at the top level, bring a level of comfort and originality to the entire piece, while respecting the sober and elegant design of the period.
All 3 drawers, are equal in size, functional, clean and rather spacious, measuring at H: 17.5 cm x W: 88 cm x D: 34 cm, providing plenty of space to store whatever one desires, whether used to store clothing in a bedroom, table linens in a dining room, or other objects in a different space.
The piece is in very good, original and vintage condition. Although minimal or normal for a piece heading towards 100 years old, there are naturally, some old traces, and light signs of age and use, as well as a beautiful patina of time on the top (see photos with 1 centime coin), edges (see photos), drawers and the structure in general (see photos.) Note a small lack of veneer at the bottom, right rear (see photo), mark of use on the left, rear edge (see photo), and the left side of the inside edge of the 2nd drawer (see photo.)
Whether used in an entry hallway, dining room, living room, or other space, this truly timeless, magnificent, eye-catching conversation piece, will blend in beautifully with other vintage, contemporary or modern décor.
