Katsinam at Galerie Flak

Now here's some exciting news if you're into Hopi and Zuni Kachina Dolls like we are, and if you're going to be in Paris at some stage over the next few months.

Kachina Dolls

Galerie Flak are presenting Katsinam, an exhibition of Hopi and Zuni Kachina Dolls.

Kachina dolls, or Katsinas, are representations of the deities and spirits of Arizona's Hopi Indians, and were commonly made from cottonwood root by uncles for their nieces. The dolls were given to Hopi children by dancers during special ceremonies to help teach them about the ceremonial dances. The craftsmanship and detail of these dolls is truly outstanding.

I am such a fan of these dolls and am so happy that we have a couple available on our site.

Kachina by Wilson Tawaquaptewa

This handsome Kachina was made by Wilson Tawaquaptewa (1873–1960), a celebrated artist and Hopi chief of the Oraibi village.

One Horned Kachina

And this one, a One-Horned Kachina Doll, is so named for the single horn that curves up and back from the top of it's head.

Katsinam runs from September 10th through until November 2nd at Galerie Flak.
