de Young

While visiting San francisco for the Wallpaper* Design Awards last night, I went to the De Young Musuem. I highly recommend the Bulgari show as well as the David Hockney, neither of which I was able to take photos of. Walking through the whole museum these were some of my highlights:

These chairs were so great. Such a simple display but so effective.

Whenever I see Oceanic art I find myself so attracted to it. I’m not sure what it is exactly; the intricate nature of the work, its representative qualities, the materially and tactility, or some combination of all of the above.

de Young - Te Rongo Kirkwood - L’ArcoBaleno blog Te Rongo Kirkwood in collaboration with weavers Judy Robson-Deane, Donna O’Hare, and Shona Tawhiao.

Especially captivating were these pieces by New Zealand glass artist Te Rongo Kirkwood. Working with various weavers she has produced these incredible pieces from Ka Awetea: A Journey of Life through Light, a series of explorations of the Maori cloak, made from glass, flax, fibre, and cotton cord. Each is equal parts intricate, captivating, and intriguing.

While a touch morbid, this coffin in the shape of a cocoa pod by Kane Kwei is fascinating.

The David Hockney show was so popular you had to sign up for a time slot in order to see it, but I tell you what . . . it was TOTALLY worth it.
