A Friday in Mexico City

An international gathering converged here in Mexico City (or DF, as they say) for the opening of the new Museo Jumex showcasing the mega contemporary art collection of Eugenio Lopez. I'll tell you all about this in my next post. In the meantime let me recap my last few couple of days in this extraordinary city. I arrived in Mexico City on Thursday afternoon and decided to get up early on Friday to head straight to three markets. I thought I'd be super eager, show up nice and early, and be all ready for action, forgetting that nothing opens and nobody has meetings before 11am!

Mexico City, markets

Artesanias Ciudadela is dedicated to crafts from all the different Mexican regions. including artisan's studios and workshops.

After visiting the markets I headed to the Museo Experimental el Eco, which was built as a collaboration between artist Mathias Goeritz and Mexican businessman Daniel Mont. The building is really interesting and the show El Árbol Cósmico—showcasing three main bodies of work by Mexican artist Claudia Fernandez—was absolutely spectacular! Claudia's work continues to surprise and impress the art community. She's always investigating social issues and creating beautifully powerful installations and projects.
