Side Table in Silver-Plated Brass and Eglomise Glass, France, 1950s

This French side table from the 1950s is made of silver-plated brass and eglomise glass. The structure is based on a symmetrical, rectangular frame, in which both tops – upper and lower – are mounted on the same metal structure. The characteristic fluted legs taper gently towards the bottom, each ending with a small, spherical foot and topped with a decorative acanthus finial, which is a unique reference to neoclassical motifs and the Louis XVI style. The edges of the tops and shelves are finished with a wide, beaded molding. The whole piece is kept in a cool, silvery tone with a highly polished, mirror-like surface that emphasizes the sophistication of the design. The two levels of the top are made of transparent eglomise glass – precisely cut, smooth, and highly glossy. The joints between the individual elements are almost invisible, confirming the attention to detail characteristic of French craftsmanship of the mid-20th century. The top shelf is 21.5 inches high, and the total height to the top of the finials is 23.5 inches; the bottom shelf is 9.5 inches high. Original condition, with minimal signs of use – there is a single small scratch visible on the lower top. The table has retained all its original elements and finish, being an example of very good vintage. The form of the furniture evokes the discreet chic of the mid-20th century, when French modernism flirted with classicist detail. The silvery sheen of the light-reflecting frames, the eglomise glass – as transparent as a Venetian mirror – and the neoclassical, pearly decorations give the table a sense of calm and a subtle narrative of its time. It is a piece of furniture that tells the story of Parisian salons, where the artistry of craftsmanship equaled practical function, and every detail had its meaning – from the proportions of the legs to the shape of the knobs. The preserved patina and delicate traces of time emphasize its pedigree rather than affect its functional characteristics. The table can find a place next to a sofa in an elegant living room with a classic or modern character. It works well with fabrics of a uniform structure – e.g., velours in shades of gray or black – or with Hollywood Regency-style elements. As an accent, it is worth combining it with other artistic glass or a decorative lamp made of polished metal, which will enhance its mirror effect. In vintage collector's interiors, it will also find its place in the company of French graphics or porcelain from the 1950s, and its neutral colors mean that it can be placed in almost any calm arrangement, where it will emphasize the careful design of the mid-20th century. No specific care instructions; eglomise glass should be gently wiped with a soft, streak-free cloth, and silver-plated brass should be cleaned without the use of strong detergents so as not to damage the galvanic coating. The table has a height of 54.5 cm to the top, 59 cm to the finials, and 24 cm to the bottom shelf. The glass is in very good condition, with only a subtle trace of use visible on the bottom shelf, which does not affect the overall appearance.
