About This Piece

This beautiful oil painting is a work of the great Polish painter Szymon (Simeon) Buchbinder.
Simeon Buchbinder was born in 1853 in Radzyn Podlaski and died in 1908 in Berlin. Much of his work represents genre scenes and historical and small portraits.
His older brother introduced him to drawing and gave him his first drawing lessons. Quickly, he developed a taste for drawing.
From 1869 to 1871, he studied at the Warsaw School of Drawing where he learned from two great painters, Wojciech Gerson and Rafał Hadziewicz.
After his studies, he obtained a worked at the Vienna Opera then joined the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts two years later under the direction of Eduard von laa Engerth.
His work takes on a new dimension in 1897, when he arrived in Berlin. It was then that he focused solely on portrait painting; that's what makes us think that the painted woman is from Berlin.
The work on this oil painting is of high quality. The light is subtle and the black background highlights the subject and especially his face.
The oil has a signature S. Buchbinder and a date that seems to be 1901.
Supervision is also of high quality.
This wood frame and stucco gild presents a rich floral decoration and has a beautiful gild with fine gold.
