About This Piece

Vintage Design

The iconic Swan armchair was designed by Arne Jacobsen and made by the Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen in 1958. This piece is from the first production series. The armchair was created as part of Jacobsen's comprehensive project for the SAS Royal Hotel (currently Radisson Collection Royal Hotel) in Copenhagen. The soft and organic line of the armchair is the result of the author's artistic approach to design and innovative technology, to which Fritz Hansen secured the rights in the 1950s. This technology allows for the shaping of furniture from hard foam material and offers more possibilities than wood. This is how Jacobsen's most famous designs were created, i.e. the Swan, Egg and Drop chairs, which combined modern technology, craftsmanship and the author's free vision. The armchair was re-upholstered with high-quality natural leather in chocolate brown with a visible texture. The swivel, four-arm legs base is made of chrome. Swan often appeared in Arne Jacobsen's comprehensive architectural projects, including the St. Catherine's College in Oxford from 1964 or the cathedral-like hall of the National Bank of Denmark.

Arne Jacobsen was born in 1902 in Copenhagen, died in 1971. He is the most famous post-war Danish designer and architect. He graduated from the School of Applied Arts in 1924 and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied architecture in 1927. He was awarded the CF Hansen medal and the Grand Prix of the 11th Milan Triennale. Jacobsen's most famous project was the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which he designed every detail, from fabrics and lamps to cutlery and furniture. AJ lamps, designed for the Royal Hotel and produced by Louis Poulsen, are a perfect example of its streamlined and elegant style. The famous Egg and Swan chairs were also designed for the Royal Hotel. Gradually, Jacobsen's designs became more modern and simplified, but still embedded in the Danish architectural tradition.

Fritz Hansen, also known as the Republic of Fritz Hansen, is a Danish furniture design company whose history begins in 1872 in Nakskov. from the very beginning, Fritz Hansen and his son Christian placed emphasis on the high quality of their furniture, which is their hallmark until the present day. The long list of orders in the first fifty years of the company's operation confirms this. At the beginning of the 20th century, Christian Hansen began experimenting with the steam-bending of beech wood, and in 1915 he created the first laminated chairs, which became the company's specialty. Arne Jacobsen completely dominated the 1950s in the company. He started working together in 1934, but his breakthrough came when he created the Ant laminated chair in 1952. The next projects: Series 7 (1955), Swan (1958) and Egg (1958), which were designed for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, became milestones in the history of Fritz Hansen and are still produced today.

The chair is in very good condition. The upholstery has been restored. The seat is 39 cm high. The original signature is attached to the chair (it comes from the original leather upholstery, which has been completely destroyed by time). The leather has natural wrinkles.

About the Creator

Arne Jacobsen

Born in Copenhagen in 1902, Arne Jacobsen apprenticed as a bricklayer before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of the Arts. In 1925, he participated in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and subsequently travelled to Germany. During this formative trip, he came under the influence of Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Prior to World War II, Jacobsen designed a number of private and public buildings in Denmark and, in the process, helped to formulate what would eventually be called the Danish Modern style. In 1943, he fled Denmark for Sweden, where he found work designing fabrics and wallpapers, but he returned home after the war. In the ensuing decades, Jacobsen became the most dominant figure in Danish architecture. Inspired greatly by Charles Eames, he began to design furniture for his interiors, such as the iconic Swan Chair and Egg Chair.

About the Maker

Fritz Hansen

Danish cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen founded his eponymous furniture manufacturing company with his son Christian in Copenhagen in 1885. The first three decades were dedicated to hand-making wood and iron frames for upholstered furniture. In 1915, however, Christian began to introduce industrial processes, such as steam-bending wood, which enabled the family business to mass-produce at a larger scale.

In 1932, Christian brought in his own sons, Fritz and Søren, who updated the product line to include more modernist styles, like Søren’s Thonet-inspired DAN Chair (1930) and a cantilevered wicker and tubular steel chair by architect Mogens Lassen (1933). Other early classics in the Fritz Hansen catalog include Kaare Klint’s Church Chair (1936), Hans Wegner’s China Chair (1944), and Børge Mogensen’s Spoke Back Sofa (1945).

During the 1950s—thanks especially to the contributions of architect Arne Jacobsen—Fritz Hansen entered its golden era, creating some of the most iconic Scandinavian designs of the 20th century. Arne Jacobsen’s Ant Chair (1952), Swan Sofa (1958) and Egg Chair & Ottoman (1958), as well as later designs by Verner Panton, Piet Hein, and Grete Jalk, all helped to cement Fritz Hansen’s legacy as one of the most beloved producers of high quality, simple-yet-elegant, Danish modern furniture.

In 1979, after 107 years of family ownership, Fritz Hansen was bought out by Skandinavisk Holding and is now known as The Republic of Fritz Hansen. Pieces from the company’s long history can be found in nearly every design museum collection there is, from MoMA and Cooper Hewitt in New York to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Arne Jacobsen’s collaboration with Fritz Hansen was the subject of the Siéntate Siéntete exhibition, hosted by the Chamber of Architects in Madrid in 2010.
