Vintage Design

Here we see the principle of the Japanese wabi-sabi, which refers to embracing imperfections and underlining impermanence. Rustic aspects, simplicity, modesty, and austerity offer a humble and honest beauty. Each piece is slightly different, where the imprecision and imperfection offer an enriching quality. Signs of age, patina, and the traces of use enhance the character of this piece. All parts are authentic. They are done in massive mahogany wood. Solid and rich in texture, it introduces a specific warmth. Charming irregularities show that each piece is unique. As Perriand tended to create pieces which support simple living, it is no wonder that she was also inspired by vivid landscapes of the French Alps. Looking up to slow and practical life there, she designed this stool which resembles the ones that were used for cow milking in rural areas. The piece is in its original condition, while the surfaces have softly been restored. I like using this stool as a subtle detail. It introduces so much warmth into the setting with its warm material and familiar shape, while offering many possibilities in use. P! About the Creator

Charlotte Perriand

Born in Paris in 1903, Charlotte Perriand studied at the Ecole de l’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs. In 1927, inspired by his architectural treatises, Perriand persuaded Le Corbusier to employ her. He put her in charge of prototype production and public presentations of the studio’s work. In collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret, Perriand developed a series of tubular steel chairs, which were—and are still today—hailed as icons of the machine age.

In 1940, she travelled to Japan as an official advisor on industrial design. When Japan joined the war, she found herself trapped in Vietnam from 1942 until 1946. During her exile, Perriand studied local techniques of woodwork and weaving. She returned to France intent on introducing straw and bamboo to modern design.

Back in France, Perriand continued her work with Le Corbusier and Prouvé. She was integral to the design of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. She remained an influential figure in the modern movement until her death in 1999.
