Louis XVI French Lacquered Wood Settee with Needlepoint Upholstery, 1905

Elegant French Louis XVI style settee, crafted in France, most likely in Lyon, circa 1905–1910. Since the 17th century, Lyon has been one of France's leading centers for the production of fine furniture, first renowned for its Renaissance and Rococo craftsmanship and later for the exceptional cabinetmaking workshops active during the early decades of the 20th century. This refined settee features a beautifully hand-carved solid beechwood frame, finished in a soft ivory lacquer with delicately gilded accents that highlight its finely executed neoclassical carvings. Its clean, balanced lines, combined with the signature fluted and tapered legs characteristic of the Louis XVI style, create a graceful silhouette of timeless elegance. The seat is upholstered in fine wool needlepoint tapestry inspired by the celebrated Aubusson tradition. The richly detailed floral design is centered by a romantic bouquet in soft, muted colors, beautifully reflecting the refined decorative taste of the Belle Époque. Decorative braid secured with brass upholstery tacks provides an elegant finishing touch while emphasizing the quality of the craftsmanship. The frame was constructed using traditional French cabinetmaking techniques of the period. Each decorative element was hand-carved before being lacquered, while the subtle gilded highlights enhance the carved ornamentation without overwhelming the overall design, resulting in a refined and harmonious appearance. Thanks to its compact proportions and balanced design, this versatile settee can serve as an entryway bench, an end-of-bed bench, a window seat, a vanity bench, or an elegant accent piece in both traditional and eclectic interiors. The quality of its craftsmanship and the understated sophistication of its design also allow it to integrate beautifully into contemporary spaces, where it creates a striking contrast while adding warmth, history, and character. Ideal for French, Neoclassical, Gustavian, Hollywood Regency, Transitional, or Contemporary Classic interiors, this elegant piece offers an authentic example of early 20th-century French decorative craftsmanship, combining decorative appeal, functionality, and enduring sophistication. The settee is in good condition. Dimensions Width: 39.8 in. (101 cm). Depth: 15.7 in. (40 cm). Height: 18.1 in. (46 cm).
