Large Festive Silver Planter on Presentoir form Delheid Frères Brussels, 1950s

Festive silver vessel in an oval shape with a slightly curved base with buckle decoration, baroque-style, four profiled straps as pilasters ending in openwork scroll feet, the panels between them framed with fine thread and leaf decoration, surrounding profiled mouldings and bands on the upper curved edge, cartouches with scallop crowns in the centre at the front and back, raised and curved volute handles split at the side. Fitting glass insert with curved top edge, facet cut in the extension of the pilasters, with stone cut decoration in between, large cut star on the ground. The silver frame of the presentoir echoing the basic shape of the jardinière, slightly cascading downwards, with repeated fine thread and leaf decoration, interrupted by four panels with shell reliefs crowning the rocaille feet, also at the longitudinal ends, inlaid mirror glass attached from below by a 36-fold screwed-on wooden plate. In 1866, two of his sons, Edmond-Joseph and Alphonse-Jules, gave the workshop its final name ‘Delheid Frères’. They registered a new trademark, the famous capital letter ‘D’ under a snake, and achieved international fame with their silverware production. The company remained active until the early 1980s.
