Job in Desperation is an original color lithograph realized by the great artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) in the 1960s. The artwork was published in the Vol. 254 of the Parisian art magazine Verve (printed by Mourlot) in 1960. Very good conditions. This beautiful print reflects Chagall's jewish heritage and his deep interest for the Bible, by which he was always fascinated. During the 1960s he realized a lot of compositions inspired by biblical themes and Eastern European folklore. The tragic story of the pious Job touched Chagall so deeply that he dedicated two lithographs to him. In this graphic, we may see Job in a great state of desperation, he seems to get into one catastrophe after another in spite of his belief in God. Darkness surrounds him, he appears deeply worried, ill, and sad, resting his head on his hand. However, Job is not completely alone: a green angel in the right-hand corner of the painting seems to be there to prevent the worst outcome. Job does not realise the meaning of these tests and asks himself at every new set of bad news how God can tolerate it that he is punished so severely. However, he remains faithful to God – and in the end is rewarded for this faithfulness.
