Vintage Design

Pair of Vase Lamps in Golden Wood 1700 Palm Holder composed of two altar bases in finely carved pine wood and gilded in fine gold with an octagonal base; the back is flat without carvings and is finished in Sienese yellow with a shoulder into which the fake flowers were inserted. The state of conservation is good compatibly with dating. They are mounted with a large lamp holder and a cylindrical lampshade in gold-colored silk; the electrical cables, plugs and switches have been replaced. The measurements of the base alone are height cm. 30 – 15 x 15; those of the lampshade height cm. 25 cm diameter. 30.

The palm holders (or palm holders) are flower vases that were placed on the altars as decorations; often of reduced shape in depth and not decorated in the rear part because they were placed against the walls in the side altars. Differently for the main altars where they were made in the round. Various materials were used, mainly wood or copper or brass sheets variously embossed or turned into sheets, but also cast bronze. The palm trees, symbol of the victory of Christianity, give way to fake flowers made of various materials such as fabric, sheet metal, beads. They are excellent as decorations to be inserted into any furnishing and particularly as lamp bases.
