French Louis XVI Style Parigina Mantel Clock in Gilded Bronze

Sumptuous and elegant French gilt bronze "Parigina" watch in Louis XVI style; watches called "Parigina" mostly produced in France (but also Italy and Germany), are watches characterized by a complex and precise movement, and enclosed in a more refined case inspired by Greek or Roman symmetrical architectural styles. Our clock is set on a rock above which is depicted seated a graceful maiden who, with a gentle and graceful manner, looks smugly into a small mirror she holds in her right hand; the rectangular base is embellished with rich and showy leaf decorations. The entire work was performed by an experienced Master Goldsmith in a workshop in Paris ( France) between 1825 and 1830. The process was bronze lost wax casting of the various elements, which were then chiseled by hand with extraordinary skill and delicacy to create splendid and lavish decorations. To finish it off was mercury gilding or fire gilding, in which a solution of mercury nitrate is applied to a piece of copper, brass or bronze; followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The object is then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury vaporizes and the gold remains, permanently adhering to the metal object; artifacts of this type reached their greatest artistic and technical development precisely in France; the workmanship was very complex and extremely harmful and dangerous to operators, in fact around 1830 French legislation banned its use for health reasons; this type of gilding has exceptional wear resistance, not like the gilding is done after 1830 by the galvanic method! The watch, has a classic double winding movement with two holes, on the left, the one for the chime, and on the right the one for the time, it has a gray dial decorated with fine engravings (over time slight stains have formed on its surface), the Arabic numerals and hands are authentic, it also comes with its original key, the shape of the spokes of the chime's "partitora" wheel, visible at the back confirms the dating of our watch, in fact, the wheels after 1830 have more linear and modern shapes. The mechanism is intact, but needs to be checked and serviced by a watchmaker. Our clock is a beautiful example of the Louis XVI style that is characterized by its classic and understated lines, created with harmony and proportion that can give the entire interior an elegant and refined air.
