Stunning "Fiandra" armchair designed by Vico Magistretti and produced by Cassina in the 70s.
The armchair is presented in the extraordinary version lined in dark brown suede in excellent original condition.
Fiandra is a project by Vico Magistretti put into production by Cassina in 1975, seating elements with simple lines and whose name evokes the "flat country", its solid trade and its precious fabrics, transferring the idea of solidity into comfort of the seats and the preciousness in the variety of coverings which ranged from classic canvas to leather, wool and velvet. The armchair, like the sofas, is made up of modular elements and the down cushion covering, fixed by means of zips, is removable.
The Fiandra sofa by Vico Magistretti is a modular system that allows you to add elements, including corners, to create the sofa of the size you want.
Designed in the 70s for Cassina, it is characterized by deep cushions, rounded edges and massive feet that allow the armchair to "float".
This design is characterized by its simplistic, round edges which are noticeable in the shape of the padding which highlights the clear structured design. Furthermore, this armchair was designed to offer maximum comfort thanks to the thick cushions and large seats.
Practically perfect general condition, we would like to point out a small stain on one side, practically on the back, which is practically invisible given the very dark color of the leather.

Vico Magistretti (1920-2006) was one of the most influential Italian designers and architects of the 20th century, known for his contribution to industrial design and modern architecture. Born in Milan and graduating from the Milan Polytechnic in 1945, he developed a style based on simplicity, elegance and functionality, reducing objects to their essential forms without sacrificing beauty and comfort. During his career he collaborated with companies such as Cassina, Artemide and Oluce, creating iconic pieces such as the Atollo lamp, the Carimate chair and the Maralunga sofa, which became symbols of Italian design. He received numerous awards, including multiple Compassi d'Oro, and his works are exhibited in prestigious museums such as the MoMA in New York. His legacy lies in his ability to combine innovation and traditional craftsmanship, influencing generations of designers through his work and teaching.

Cassina is a high-quality Italian furniture company based in Meda, in the province of Como, founded in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina. The company was a pioneer in the industrial design sector in Italy and contributed significantly to the promotion of modern and contemporary design internationally.
from its early years, Cassina worked with some of the most important designers of the 20th century, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret, with whom it developed a close collaboration. About the Creator

Vico Magistretti

Innovative architect, industrial designer, and urban planner Vico Magistretti was a driving force in Italian design from the 1960s onwards. Born into a family of successful Milanese architects in 1920, he became one of Italy’s most respected designers, celebrated for an uncanny mastery of clarity of form.

During the Second World War, Magistretti fled to Lausanne, Switzerland to escape military deportation and began to attend classes at the Champ Universitaire Italien in Lausanne. There, he met and befriended legendary rationalist architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-69), cofounder of BBPR, who would become a lifelong mentor.

Upon returning to Italy, Magistretti pursued an architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano, graduating in 1945, and began working at his father’s architectural firm with Paolo Chessa. Shortly after joining the firm, Magistretti’s father, Pier Giulio, passed away.

In the immediate postwar reconstruction years, Magistretti began to work produce modernist furniture designs, especially for exhibition in R.I.M.A. and the Triennale alongside other important Italian architect-designers like Franco Albini, the Castiglioni brothers, Ignazio Gardella, and Marco Zanuso.

During the 1960s and beyond, Magistretti created a number of sleek, high concept furniture and lighting design for major manufacturers, such as Artemide, Campeggi, Cassina, De Padova, Flou, Fontana Arte, Fritz Hansen, Kartell, Olivari, Oluce, Poggi, Schiffini, and Gebrüder Thonet Vienna. Iconic designs from Magistretti career include the Eclipse Table Lamp (1966, Compasso d’Oro 1967), Selene Stacking Chair (1968), Chimera Lamp (1969), and Giuone Floor Lamp (1969) for Artemide; Maralunga Seating (1973, Compasso d’Oro in 1979) and Nuvola Rossa Bookshelves (1977) for Cassina; and the Sonora Pendant (1976) and Model 233 Atollo Table Lamp (1977, Compasso d’Oro 1979) for Oluce.

Magistretti’s most famous architectural additions to Milan are the Tower in Park in Via Revere (1953-56, in conjunction with Franco Longoni) and the office block in Corso Europa (1955-1957). Other architectural feats include the Towers in Piazzale Aquileia (1961-64), Bassetti House in Azzate (1959-62), Cassina House in Carimate (1964-65), a house in Via Conservatorio in Milan (1963-66), Cusano Milanino Town Hall (1966-69), the Milano San Felice neighborhood in Segrate (1966-69, in partnership with Luigi Caccia Dominioni), and a house in Piazza San Marco (1969-71).

Throughout the course of his career, Magistretti held prestigious professorships at the Royal College of Arts in London and the Domus Academy in Milan. His work has been acquired by important museums around the world, including MoMA New York and the Victoria & Albert in London.

Magistretti passed away in 2006.

Cassina

Italian furniture manufacturing giant Cassina, originally named Amedeo Cassina, was founded by brothers Cesare (1909-1979) and Umberto (1910-1992) Cassina in Meda, Italy in 1927. Although initially specialized in bespoke woodworking and high-end interiors, by the 1950s the brothers took the company in a new direction, anticipating the growing demand for mass-produced home furnishings. Cassina is often credited with introducing industrial design to Italy and has built an international reputation for collaborating with some of the world’s most respected designers.

Notably, in 1964 (while famed architect Le Corbusier was still alive), Cassina signed the first exclusive licensing agreement covering the edition rights for designs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. The company soon after launched the I Maestri Collection which over the decades has gathered major icons of design under the Cassina brand, such as the LC4 Lounge (1928) jointly designed by Le Corbusier, Jeanneret, and Perriand, as well as Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld’s 635 Red & Blue Armchair (1918), Scottish architect-designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House Chair (1902), and many more.

With a focus more on partnering with the best designers rather than creating and maintaining a particular style, Cassina is responsible for some of the most recognized and beloved designs of the 20^th and 21^st centuries. Highlights include Italian architect-designer Gio Ponti’s Superleggera Chair (1957), German designer Konstantin Grcic’s Kanu Chair (2009), Iranian-British architect Zaha Hadid’s Zephyr Sofa (2013), and French designer Philippe Starck’s My World Sofa (2013). Throughout its visionary collaborations with both design luminaries and cutting-edge experiments with new talents, Cassina has remained dedicated to the Italian design ideals of craftsmanship and quality, and the brand continues to excel in the fusion of industrial technology and artisanal production.

Cassina’s designs are included in permanent collections the world over, such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein) and London Design Museum.
