Condition: good original condition Special Remarks: few signs of use. This ash extending table is simple and straightforward in construction and of high quality. It shows only minor signs of wear, although a few minor blemishes in the clear varnish had to be touched up. Ash wood has a special feature: When exposed to light, the rather pale wood takes on an intense honey tone, clearly visible here, as the extension leaves are significantly lighter than the rest of the table. Despite its age, it still functions very well. this Object: We are offering this elegant and practical ash extending table from a private collection. Thanks to careful handling, it has survived for over 60 years in the home of the previous owners, along with the matching chairs. The ensemble, both in design and materials, is somewhat reminiscent of Charlotte Perriand's Chalet chairs. Her designs were highly influential; internationally acclaimed, they inspired many modern manufacturers of their time. The table features a brand mark on the bottom of the crossbar: a maple leaf with two horizontal notches.

About the Creator

Charlotte Perriand

Born in Paris in 1903, Charlotte Perriand studied at the Ecole de l’Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs. In 1927, inspired by his architectural treatises, Perriand persuaded Le Corbusier to employ her. He put her in charge of prototype production and public presentations of the studio’s work. In collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret, Perriand developed a series of tubular steel chairs, which were—and are still today—hailed as icons of the machine age.

In 1940, she travelled to Japan as an official advisor on industrial design. When Japan joined the war, she found herself trapped in Vietnam from 1942 until 1946. During her exile, Perriand studied local techniques of woodwork and weaving. She returned to France intent on introducing straw and bamboo to modern design.

Back in France, Perriand continued her work with Le Corbusier and Prouvé. She was integral to the design of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. She remained an influential figure in the modern movement until her death in 1999.
