Johannes Hemann

Johannes Hemann was born in 1980 in Göttingen, Germany. Hemann studied Product Design at Offenbach University of Art and Design in Germany, graduating in 2008. After graduating, Hemann worked as a design consultant for Stylepark Frankfurt from 2009 until 2010 and subsequently interned with KiBiSi in Copenhagen from 2010 until 2011.

In 2011, Hemann established his eponymous studio in Frankfurt, Germany. Since 2013, his studio has been located in Bad Sooden Allendorf, Germany. Hemann describes his design aesthetic as organic and process driven, as he attempts to “translate the complexity and diversity of nature into objects and products.” Standout projects include Stolenwood Catching the Wild Coat Rack (2005); Stolenwood Hit It (2005) a series of saloon-style furniture made from PE Foam; and Storm (2008-2015), which is a collection of furniture objects that are created and shaped by the power of wind using compressed air, adhesives, and heat. In 2015, the collection was commissioned by the architect Peter Marino for the Christian Dior flagship store in Seoul, South Korea. Other notable designs include Wrap (2016), a series of pendant and table lights that are made by wrapping brass, copper, and iron wire around the branches of trees to create a hollow shell; and Akoya Table Light (2017).

Hemann’s work has been exhibited at various international design exhibitions throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. Most recently in 2016, Hemann exhibited his Core series at Galerie Joseph during Paris Design Week, his Wrap series at Galerie Joseph during D'DAYS, and his Storm series at the gallery Victor Hunt in Brussels.

Hemann has been nominated for multiple awards including the Design Award Newcomer of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2010 and 2011, as well as Young Designer for the German Design Award in 2012. In 2012, he was the winner of the Domaine de Boisbuchet Cork Competition in France.
