Jean Baptiste Fastrez

Born in France in 1984, designer Jean-Baptiste Fastrez earned his degree from the National Institute for Industrial Design (ENSCI) in Paris in 2010, graduating summa cum laude. He interned at François Azambourg’s studio in 2006 and at Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec’s studio in 2008. He became an assistant to the Bouroullec brothers in 2009, before opening his own Paris-based studio in 2012.

In 2011, he won first place at the Design Parade competition in Hyéres, France, earning him the opportunity to collaborate with Galerie Kreo in Paris.

To date, much of Fastrez’s work seeks to re-address the designs of existing products, thereby endowing them with greater meaning and improved functionality.  He describes his designs as “enriched objects”; combinations of industrial manufacturing and artisanal craftsmanship, as well as the synthetic and the natural. Notable projects thus far include his acetate Mask Mirrors series (2012), the Tomahawk Hair Dryers (2011), Variations Upon an Electric Kettle (2010), and the Totem and Stromboli tables (2013).

Fastrez lives and works in Paris.
