Vintage Design

This elegant and exceptionally crafted dining set was designed by Torbjorn Afdal, one of Norway’s most celebrated mid-century modern designers. Executed in richly figured rosewood, the set embodies the understated sophistication and meticulous craftsmanship that define Scandinavian furniture of the 1960s. The organically shaped extending dining table features beautifully rounded edges and a harmonious silhouette, while the six matching dining chairs display Afdal’s signature sculptural backrests and refined proportions (2 of the chairs feature armrests). The table features two 45cm additional leaves that allow for extension from 120cm to 165cm to 210cm. The warm tones and exceptional grain of the rosewood create a striking yet timeless presence.

The whole sat was carefully restored with respect for its original character. The wood has been professionally cleaned and refinished with natural oil, enhancing the depth and beauty of the rosewood while preserving its authentic appearance. The chairs have been newly upholstered in premium camel-colored leather, offering both exceptional comfort and a warm, sophisticated contrast to the dark timber. Equally suited to contemporary and period interiors, this dining set represents the enduring appeal of Scandinavian Modernism – where elegant design, honest materials, and impeccable craftsmanship come together in perfect balance. The set is in excellent restored condition, perfectly ready for everyday use. Professionally refinished in oil. Chairs newly upholstered in high-quality carmel leather. Minor age-related wear consistent with the set’s vintage.

About the Creator

Torbjørn Afdal

Torbjørn Afdal (1917-1999) is remembered as one of the most prolific and well-respected Norwegian designers of the postwar period. Born in 1917 in the Voss region of Norway, Afdal studied at the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry, graduating in 1946. He was taken on as a designer by Bruksbo Tegnekontor (Bruksbo Drawing Office), eventually becoming the company's top designer.

Afdal’s Krobo Bench (1960) was an instant success in Norway, perhaps because its ultra-minimal aesthetic rendered it uniquely flexible; this was the bench that could be anything you wanted it to be. Afdal also designed liquor cabinets and dry bars, including Bacchus (1955) and, more famously, Times (1960s), a rosewood liquor cabinet on castors with subtle brass detailing. Afdal’s other creations include the Hunter Lounge Chair (1962) and the Minerva Office Chair (1965).

Many sources state that Afdal’s Form Dining Set (1959) was awarded the gold medal at the So Wohnt Europa furniture fair in Munich, but Pamono's editors are still working to confirm this. While many vintage dealers list either Bruksbo or Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik as Afdal's manufacturers, the labels appear together and should be considered one and the same company.

Afdal’s designs were collected by US First Lady Jackie Kennedy for the White House, Japanese Emperor Hirohito, and Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.
