About This Piece

Vintage Design

Rare and wonderful "Coupé" sofa bed by Mario Bellini and produced by Cassina in 1976, which has an essential but sophisticated structure, characterized by soft lines and harmonious proportions.
Its design conveys a sense of lightness and elegance, thanks to the sinuous shapes that outline the headboard and side armrests.
The structure is covered in a light fabric, probably linen or raw cotton, taut and well adherent to the bed frame.
The joints are highlighted by leather profiles and hinges that enhance the artisan precision and refined design, which allow them to be dismantled.
The headboard and side rails have a wavy shape, creating a soft and welcoming visual effect, almost like an embrace that envelops the rest space.
The bed rests on small, barely visible black feet, which lift it off the ground just enough to give it a light and slender appearance. The support base for the mattress is made up of a densely-meshed metal mesh, a guarantee of breathability and comfort, which includes a single mattress with standard dimensions of 80x190cm.
The clean and timeless aesthetics of the "Coupé" bed make it suitable for different types of environments, from the most classic to the most contemporary, from the bedroom to the living room.
The reference to vintage carriages in the curved profile of the headboard and sides suggests a retro elegance, reinterpreted in a modern key through minimal materials and details. A piece of furniture that combines functionality and beauty, in perfect balance between tradition and innovation.
The name "Coupé" derives from the horse-drawn carriages, reflecting Bellini's intent to connect the world of elite design with real life and its historical roots.
Very rare item for collectors, it is in excellent general condition with tiny signs of aging given its almost 50 years, as shown in the photographs, it will be shipped disassembled to reduce transport costs.

About the Creator

Mario Bellini

World-renowned architect and designer Mario Bellini has been an influential figure in Italian design since the 1960s. His prolific body of work spans architecture, urban planning, and furniture and industrial design.

Bellini was born in Milan in 1935. He graduated with a degree in architecture from Milan’s Polytechnic University in 1959.  Shortly after, he became the design director at La Rinascente, a popular chain of Italian department stores. In 1963, he was hired by tech-firm Olivetti as their chief design consultant. In the same year, he established the architectural and design firm Studio Bellini in Milan with business partner Marco Romano.

Although Bellini’s designs were less iconoclastic than his contemporary postmodern designers, they were no less innovative and are characterized by original, organic, technically complex forms.. Iconic designs include the Amanta Chair (1966) and Le Bambole Sofa (1972) both for B&B Italia; the Kar-a-Sutra van (1972) for Citroën, which was exhibited at Italy: The New Domestic Landscape at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1972; the Divisumma 18 Electronic Calculator (1973) for Olivetti; the 412 Cab Chair (1976-7) and Victoria Series (1982) for Cassina; and the Bellini Chair (1998) for Heller, which won a Compasso d’Oro in 2001. Bellini has also designed for major international companies such as Artemide, Brionvega, Fiat, Flos, Pirelli, Renault, Rosenthal, Tecno, Vitra, and Yamaha.

From the 1980s, Bellini dedicated himself almost entirely to architecture. His architectural feats include the Villa Erba Exhibition and Convention Centre in Cernobbio, Como (1986-1990); the Tokyo Design Centre (1988-1992); the Natuzzi America Headquarters in North Carolina (1996-1998); the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (1996-2003); the Deutsche Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt (2006-11); the City History Museum of Bologna (2003-12); the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre in Paris (2005-12); and the new Milan Convention Centre (2008-12), which is the largest in Europe. The prolific architect has many Italian projects currently underway or just completed including the refurbishment of terminal three at Roma-Fiumicino Airport (2014-2017), the Erzelli Science and Technology Park in Genoa, and the new Antiquarium Museum in Rome (2015-2017). At the time of writing, Bellini has various projects that are still at the design stage including the ‘Eco-City’ of Zhenjiang in China (2013-2018) and a large residential, cultural, and sports complex in Qatar (2014-2022).

From 1985 until 1991, Bellini edited the influential architectural and design magazine, Domus. In 1987, the New York Museum of Modern Art dedicated its first retrospective to the Italian master, honoring his life’s work and committing twenty-five pieces to its permanent collection. As well as being the focus of two more exhibitions, Bellini also curated countless art, design, and architecture exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. The number of accolades awarded to the designer-architect is almost endless. To date, he has received eight Compasso d’Oro awards, the Medaglia d’Oro (2004)—which recognizes Bellini’s contribution to design and architecture around the world, the Ambrogino d’Oro for civic merit (2011), and many many others.

Today, Bellini leads seminars and workshops at universities and academic institutions around the world.

About the Maker

Cassina

Italian furniture manufacturing giant Cassina, originally named Amedeo Cassina, was founded by brothers Cesare (1909-1979) and Umberto (1910-1992) Cassina in Meda, Italy in 1927. Although initially specialized in bespoke woodworking and high-end interiors, by the 1950s the brothers took the company in a new direction, anticipating the growing demand for mass-produced home furnishings. Cassina is often credited with introducing industrial design to Italy and has built an international reputation for collaborating with some of the world’s most respected designers.

Notably, in 1964 (while famed architect Le Corbusier was still alive), Cassina signed the first exclusive licensing agreement covering the edition rights for designs by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. The company soon after launched the I Maestri Collection which over the decades has gathered major icons of design under the Cassina brand, such as the LC4 Lounge (1928) jointly designed by Le Corbusier, Jeanneret, and Perriand, as well as Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld’s 635 Red & Blue Armchair (1918), Scottish architect-designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House Chair (1902), and many more.

With a focus more on partnering with the best designers rather than creating and maintaining a particular style, Cassina is responsible for some of the most recognized and beloved designs of the 20th and 21st centuries. Highlights include Italian architect-designer Gio Ponti’s Superleggera Chair (1957), German designer Konstantin Grcic’s Kanu Chair (2009), Iranian-British architect Zaha Hadid’s Zephyr Sofa (2013), and French designer Philippe Starck’s My World Sofa (2013).  Throughout its visionary collaborations with both design luminaries and cutting-edge experiments with new talents, Cassina has remained dedicated to the Italian design ideals of craftsmanship and quality, and the brand continues to excel in the fusion of industrial technology and artisanal production.

Cassina’s designs are included in permanent collections the world over, such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein) and London Design Museum.

Cassina is now a part of the prestigious Poltrona Frau Group.
