Vintage Design

The two chairs are sold as a set. Johannes Andersen (1903-1991) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinetmaker known for his elegant and functional furniture designs. He was born at a time when Scandinavian design was gaining in importance and developed into an important representative of mid-century design. Andersen studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and began his career in the 1930s. He initially worked as a carpenter and quickly developed a passion for designing furniture that was both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

His style is characterized by clean lines, organic shapes and a harmonious combination of functionality and beauty. Andersen is particularly well known for his work with wood, especially teak and rosewood, which he used to make furniture. His designs include a variety of furniture pieces, including tables, chairs, cabinets and display cabinets.

Many of his designs are characterized by innovative details, such as fold-down tops or pleasing edges. Andersen collaborated with various Danish manufacturers and designed a large number of pieces of furniture that are now considered classics. His work is represented in many museums and collections of modern design worldwide.

About the Creator

Johannes Andersen

While information on designer Johannes Andersen is limited and difficult to verify, it is believed that he was born in 1903 in Aarhus, Denmark, and that he initially apprenticed as a cabinetmaker. He went on to work for many years in a number of workshops before opening his own architectural and furniture workshop in the 1930s.

Andersen’s designs span seating, tables, and storage in well-crafted materials, such as rosewood and teak. His career paralleled the midcentury’s growing appreciation for Danish furniture designs, and he attracted international attention—particularly for coffee tables like the highly sculptural Smile Table.

Andersen worked steadily for his own firm—as well as Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian companies such as Trensum, CFC Silkeborg, Bramin, and Uldum Møbelfabrik—until he closed his shop in his eighties. He passed away in 1991.
