About This Piece

Vintage Design

This exceptional mid-century modern sideboard, crafted by Belgian designer Alfred Hendrickx in the 1950s for Belform, is truly one-of-a-kind. One sliding door is covered with a unique ceramic illustration signed by the artist. The entire piece is enveloped in Bubinga veneer, supported by an elegant black lacquered frame, typical of Hendrickx's iconic style from that period.
Even with its years of experience, this high-quality sideboard is still looking sharp! It's in great original condition, showing only a few signs of its well-loved life. Just a little bit of wear on the sides, but nothing that takes away its charm.

Alfred Hendrickx (1931 - 1976) emerged as a prominent figure in Belgium's furniture design scene during the 1950s. with a family legacy rooted in the Van Fleteren furniture firm, founded by his grandfather, Hendrickx inherited a rich tradition of craftsmanship. Transitioning from ship interiors to residential furniture in the post-war period, Van Fleteren embraced the trend of 'social furniture', a shift that Alfred Hendrickx contributed to significantly. In the 1950s, Hendrickx's designs for Van Fleteren resulted in the creation of the iconic 'Belform' collection in 1953. This collection marked a turning point for the company.
They introduced lighter, more versatile pieces with a sleek, modern aesthetic influenced by Italian design. Hendrickx's participation in Expo '58, the Brussels World's Fair, further elevated his status. His work alongside other prominent Belgian designers like Willy Van Der Meeren, Jos De Mey and Lucien Engels, solidified his position as one of Belgium's most important post-war designers. Today, Hendrickx's furniture remains highly sought after by collectors and vintage design enthusiasts, revered as emblematic examples of the Belgian modernist style.

About the Creator

Alfred Hendrickx

Belgian designer Alfred Hendrickx was born in 1931. While information is limited, it is known that Hendrickx collaborated with Belgian furniture manufacturer Belform throughout the midcentury, designing elegant, sculptural pieces, including tables , seating , storage solutions , and sideboards . His 1950s and ‘60s-era pieces have been recently rediscovered on the vintage market, sought after for their more “industrial-style” take on the midcentury Scandinavian look, using both fine woods like rosewood and teak and less luxurious materials like laminates and steel.

About the Maker

Belform

Little to no verifiable information is available on the Belgian furniture manufacturer Belform, and it is unclear when the company was founded and when or why the company ceased production. However, it is known that the Belgian designer Alfred Hendrickx (b. 1931) designed elegant, sculptural pieces for Belform throughout the midcentury. His designs included tables , seating , storage solutions , and sideboards in juxtaposing materials, often pairing nicely grained teak and rosewood with less luxurious materials such as laminates and steel. His sideboards and desks feature characteristic square metal pulls, which are often lacquered black.

Hendrickx’s other 1950s and ‘60s-era pieces have been recently rediscovered on the vintage market, sought after for their more “industrial-style” take on the midcentury Scandinavian look. Designs include the Model S5 armchair (c. 1950), Model S3 dining chair (1958), and the three-legged Sabena Lounge Chair (1958). Inspired by the streamline shape of airplanes, the chair was designed for the first-class lounge for Sabena Airlines at the Zaventem Airport in Brussels. With only 150 copies originally produced and a limited amount of copies still left in existence, the Sabena is a true rarity on the vintage market.
