This smoked convex mirror dates from the late 19th century. The black mirror, also known as a Claude Lorrain mirror or simply a Claude mirror, is a small mirror with a slightly convex surface, tinted a dark color, traditionally lampblack. Set in a binding similar to that of a sketchbook or kept in a case with a lid, this device was, in the 18th century, the tool of artists and connoisseurs, travelers, and lovers of landscape painting. The black mirror's function is to present the subject isolated from its surroundings and to flatten the tones of the image, thus allowing for quick determination of optimal framing and a better appreciation of the tonal distribution.
