Antique Wooden Display Cabinet with Original Beveled Glass and Lived-in Patina, 1890s

The antique "Elswyn" sideboard was likely made in Germany between 1900 and 1920 and combines traditional craftsmanship with careful, sustainable restoration. Crafted from solid wood, this historic farmhouse cupboard impresses with its clean proportions, original doors with beveled glass, authentic patina, and an exceptional interior that has been deliberately preserved. with its timeless appeal, the piece blends seamlessly into classic country-style interiors as well as modern settings in shabby chic, French country, wabi-sabi, rustic, or Scandinavian farmhouse styles.

The cupboard was discovered in an old farmhouse in Thuringia and had been used for many decades. During its restoration, the focus was not on complete renewal, but rather on preserving its history. Every step was carried out with respect for the original material, ensuring that the craftsmanship and character of the piece remain evident to this day.

The solid wood frame was thoroughly cleaned, stabilized, and carefully sanded. The exterior was then painted with several thin coats of high-quality chalk paint in a warm, off-white. The paint was deliberately applied by hand to allow the natural wood grain, as well as minor imperfections and signs of wear, to remain visible. Finally, the surface was hand-polished with homemade natural beeswax. This resulted in a pleasantly matte, silky finish with a natural feel.

A special feature of this cabinet lies within. Instead of completely removing the old layers of paint, they were intentionally preserved. Decades-old paint, exposed wood, and historical signs of use now form a unique surface reminiscent of abstract art. This authentic interior tells the story of the piece in an impressive way and distinguishes Elswyn from conventionally restored cabinets.

The original doors with beveled glass add further elegance to the piece and offer a view of the interior. Behind the doors, the upper section features a spacious compartment with a shelf for dishes, glassware, or decorative collectibles. Below, four open compartments provide practical storage for linens, books, ceramics, or home accessories. Thanks to its balanced proportions, the cabinet appears light and harmonious despite its generous storage space.

Historic farmhouse cabinets of this type were crafted by regional carpenters at the beginning of the 20th century and were designed to last for decades. Solid wood, sturdy joinery, and functional design were paramount. It is precisely this craftsmanship that makes original furniture from this period so highly sought-after by collectors and lovers of authentic furnishings.

Today, Elswyn is versatile enough to serve as a china cabinet, display cabinet, living room cabinet, kitchen cabinet, bookcase, or decorative storage unit. It also blends harmoniously into boutique hotels, vacation homes, concept stores, or stylish restaurants. Its understated color scheme and original patina create a warm atmosphere without being obtrusive.

Sustainability plays a central role in the restoration of historic furniture. Instead of using new materials, the original substance was preserved and enhanced with traditional materials. Chalk paint, natural beeswax, and the respectful treatment of the historic surfaces extend the lifespan of this piece of furniture for many more decades. This results in a high-quality, unique piece that preserves history while simultaneously supporting contemporary living.

Elswyn is not an industrially manufactured piece of furniture, but an original testament to German craftsmanship. The visible signs of wear, minor imperfections, and the natural patina are expressions of its age and underscore its authenticity. Each cabinet has its own story – and it is precisely this uniqueness that makes Elswyn a piece of furniture with personality.
