Antique Chinese Porcelain Vase, 1800s

A finely potted and architecturally striking blue-and-white porcelain vase, executed in the Jiajing style of the 16th century as a refined Ming revival interpretation, likely produced in Jingdezhen during the late 18th to early 19th century.

The square gu-form body is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, featuring alternating panels of imperial dragons and scholarly figures in garden landscapes. The linework displays a more spontaneous and expressive hand, recalling the freer brushstrokes of provincial kilns that flourished during the Jiajing–Wanli transition and were later admired and emulated in Qing scholarly circles.

The cobalt tone is a refined, soft grey-blue in natural light, typical of hand-ground mineral pigments rather than the stronger hues of later export porcelain. This tonal restraint enhances the piece’s scholarly character and architectural silhouette, muted blue-green cobalt, admired for its subtlety — known in connoisseur terms as “hui lan” (灰蓝, grey-blue)

The base bears a six-character Jiajing reign mark (大明嘉靖年製 – “Made in the Great Ming, Jiajing Period”), rendered in underglaze blue within a recessed square foot. The unglazed footrim shows natural iron wash and small kiln grit adhesions consistent with traditional Ming-style firing.

The glaze reveals shifting tones of blue, grey, and soft green depending on the light, a hallmark of finely ground 16th-century-style pigment. A rare Ming-revival interpretation that embodies the dialogue between antiquity and Qing artistry, this piece offers both historical resonance and refined decorative appeal.
