About This Piece

Vintage Design

A dragonfly lamp after the model Tiffany Studios introduced around 1900 with a domed leaded-glass shade on a cast bronze base. Most shades in this pattern are worked in strong multicolors; this one is built almost entirely from creamy opaline and oyster-white glass, softly mottled and faintly iridescent, with the dragonflies in amber, honey and tortoiseshell. Their bodies are set with a shell-like opalescent glass and their eyes are domed amber cabochons. They sit on the diagonal rather than upright, and their wingtips break through a lower rim that has been cut deliberately irregular. The base spirals like a vine around a trunk, verdigris patina caught in the recesses, more dragonflies modeled in relief at the foot. The dragonfly came into design through Japanese prints and suited the moment exactly — short-lived, transparent-winged, iridescent, and ideal in glass. At Tiffany Studios the shade was developed in the women's glass department under Clara Driscoll and drew wide notice at the 1900 Paris Exposition.
