Futurism, Italy,Rabbit, 1925 Aligi Sassu (Milan, July 17, 1912 - Pollença, July 17, 2000) was an Italian painter and sculptor. In 1929 he enrolled at the Brera Academy. In 1934 he stayed for three months in Paris, visited an exhibition by Matisse, studied the work of Gericault, Cezanne and the Impressionists but above all Delacroix at museums. In 1935 he returned to Paris, his anti-fascist commitment grew which, once he returned to Italy, cost him his prison. In 1947 he moved to the province of Varese, where he worked intensely and experimented with new techniques. He mainly paints cafes, sacred paintings and about a hundred ceramics are born. In 1964 the Spanish period begins. Bullfighting and the landscapes of the island of Mallorca are born, other subjects, such as the mythological theme, are revisited. He introduces the acrylic technique, which allows him to create more vivid and brighter colors. In 1973 he created the sets and costumes of the Sicilian Vespers for the Teatro Regio in Turin and a room was dedicated to him in the Gallery of Modern Art in the Vatican. In 1976 he created two mosaics for Sant’Andrea in Pescara and in 1977 he exhibited in Rotterdam, Toronto and Mallorca. In 1984 an anthological exhibition at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara was then transferred to Rome at Castel Sant’Angelo. The same year another great anthology at the Palazzo Reale in Milan. Other exhibitions take place in Seville, Germany, Madrid and Canada. In 1986 he exhibited at the XI Quadrennial in Rome, at the Triennale in Milan and completed the one hundred and thirteen panels on the Divine Comedy, three of which were purchased by the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. In Munich a large anthology with works from 1927 to 1985. In 1992, eighty paintings made up a traveling exhibition in South America. In 1993 he completed the “Myths of the Mediterranean”, a 150 square meter ceramic mural for the new seat of the European Parliament in Brussels. 1996 saw the donation of three hundred and sixty-two works to the city of Lugano: the Aligi Sassu Foundation was born. On July 17, 1999, on the occasion of his eighty-seventh birthday, an anthology was inaugurated at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.
