About This Piece

This spelter sculpture with brown patina, representing a mare and her foal, is a beautiful illustration of the work of Pierre-Jules Mène, a 19th century French animal sculptor.
It testifies to the popularity of his creations, even after his death in 1879.
Pierre-Jules Mène (1810-1879) is considered the father of modern animal sculpture.
He has devoted his career to representing animals in their diversity, with attention to anatomical detail and a particular sensitivity.
His works, often small in size, were highly prized by the bourgeoisie of his time.
This sculpture represents a mare and her foal, in a protective attitude. The mare, with her head lowered, seems to be watching over her little one.
The foal, for its part, seeks contact with its mother.
