Vintage Design

A super rare and highly versatile floor lamp, designed and produced by Stilnovo in Italy around 1960. This striking piece captures the innovative spirit of the company, combining materials, colors, and technical ingenuity in a single design. The lamp stands on a weighted conical base, finished with the distinctive crackle paint popular in the period, which adds both texture and character. from this base rises a double square-tubed arm, extending elegantly upward to support the shade. The shade itself is a composition of two acrylic glass elements, one in white and the other in yellow, creating a dynamic interplay of light and tone. At its center, a ring of anodized brass with black detailing anchors the design, while brass fittings also finish the centers of the shades. These not only provide a refined visual accent but also function cleverly as heat outlets, underscoring the balance between aesthetics and utility. The lamp is highly adjustable, allowing it to be set in many different positions, which enhances its functionality and makes it adaptable to a wide variety of interiors. Whether it is as a reading lamp or a decorative piece, this lamp will provide the best for both. This model was featured in several Stilnovo advertisements of the period, underlining its importance as a showcase design for the company, a true parade piece that embodied their ambitions. The mix of materials and finishes demonstrates the experimental elegance for which Stilnovo became renowned. Still bearing the impressed Stilnovo mark on the reverse of the shade, the lamp confirms its authenticity. Preserved in very good original condition with minor, age-related paint losses, it represents a rare and remarkable chapter in Italian postwar design history. About the Maker

Stilnovo

Italian lighting manufacturer Stilnovo was founded by designer Bruno Gatta in 1946 in Lainate, an industrial suburb of Milan. In response to the aftermath World War II—at a time when Italy was focused on rebuilding under conditions of scarcity—Gatta dedicated Stilnovo to the production of innovative lighting elements that embody rationalist, form-follows-function principles.

In the postwar era, designer Gaetano Sciolari took on the role of in-house designer. As economic recovery swept through Italy, Stilnovo became known as a prestigious and cutting-edge brand for both public and private spaces.

In the mid-1960s, Bruno’s son, Dino Gatta, had the idea to invite some of the best designers of the day to develop new products, and Stilnovo became a hotbed of progressive design ideas and a laboratory for material experimentation. Standouts from this futuristic era include the Periscopio Floor Lamp (1967) by Danilo & Corrado Aroldi, the Treiedo Spotlight (1970) and the Topo Adjustable Wall Lamp (1970) by Joe Colombo, the Lucetta Table Lamp (1970) by Cini Boeri, the Fante Desk Lamp (1978) by De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi, and the Valigia Desk Lamp (1977) by Ettore Sottsass. Many Stillnovo pieces were exhibited in MoMA’s landmark Italy: The New Domestic Landscape exhibition in 1972.

Massimo Anselmi, an art director from the worlds of fashion design and contemporary art, acquired Stilnovo in 2012 and launched re-editions of iconic Stilnovo designs at Salone the following year.
